Local Art: A Lesson at New Creations Art Gallery

by Andrea
April 20th, 2011

Recently, local Artist Jack Prasad invited me on a personal tour of his gallery, New Creations Art Gallery and Studio, located right across from Memorial Peace Park in Downtown Maple Ridge.

New Creations Art Gallery is a multi- roomed gallery showcasing works of many local artists. The gallery features a gift shop  and studio space for artists in residence, including a studio where Jack gives demonstrations and art lessons. However, the most innovative and captivating room is Jack’s Lumiere Noir showroom. An art experience unlike any other, this room features Jacks luminescent works of nature and landscape art glowing under black light. It is a breathtaking and meditative experience that must be seen in person to be appreciated.

The center gallery at New Creations Features local artists

Jack began his love affair with art while working as a longshoreman. His initial works were pen and ink drawings, reflecting coastal images of boats and such. His evolution as an artist has taken him through other mediums such as watercolor and acrylic, as well as his pioneering the use of a very costly luminescent paint. Today, he’s painting in acrylics in a loose and natural way, and sharing his expertise with those who wish to get a little glimpse at his methods.

Jack’s style is certainly his own, and his tool are simple. Sponges, knives and simple brushes.  Today’s demo begins on a board primed with his own mixture of medium. What emerges at the end is striking!

New Creations Art Gallery and Studio is open 6 days a week (closed Mondays), from 11 am to 4 pm.  Sundays, the studio is open from 12-4, and this is a good day to drop in to catch Jack’s demonstrations. You can also find Jack doing demos at the Haney Farmer’s Market throughout Spring and Summer.   Each month the Gallery features various individual  artists, and this month it’s all about local artists from Maple Ridge, including members of the Garibaldi Art Club.

Local Artist: Isabel Gibson

by Andrea
April 7th, 2011

The more artists I speak to, the more I see a familiar pattern emerging. Many of us (yep, I’m an artist too)  shun our creativity for the necessities of life, until we can no longer deny it and subsequently begin passionately delving into art.  Local artist Isabel Gibson has much the same story.

Isabel Gibson

Born in New Zealand, Isabel moved to Canada in her twenties, and has spent the last twenty  years of her life as a resident of Maple Ridge.  In her childhood, she did not have the opportunity to  pursue art, but as a primary teacher for many years,  artwork was always the best part of teaching. A little more than ten years ago, she decided to pursue that childhood passion and began taking courses from renowned local artists such as Roberta Coombs and Heidi Lambert. Although her initial medium was watercolor,  she has begun to explore painting with acrylic as well as using acrylics and watercolors together.  Her subjects are the natural world and boats; an obvious influence from growing up in rural,  coastal New Zealand.

I asked Isabel my traditional question: What do you love about Maple Ridge?  “Being close to the rural areas”, she responded “and riding my bicycle on the dykes”

Isabel is an 8 year member of The Garibaldi Art Club of Maple Ridge, and has worked tirelessly on the club’s history book and on the publicity committee. She is submitting works to this weekend’s  juried spring show entitled “Pursuit of Excellence”. Hopefully you will be able to see her work there, along with many other wonderful works by members of the Garibaldi Art Club.

Make plans to stop by the show being held at Fraserview Village Hall located at 22610 116th ave ( just off the Haney Bypass). Opening night begins April 8th at 7 pm, and the show continues on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4pm. Stop by to enjoy wonderful art, fresh baked goodies and coffee. Don’t forget to buy a ticket for the amazing Garibaldi Art Club raffle baskets, with all proceeds going directly to support local art in Maple Ridge.

P.S. I’ll be live at the event on opening night, so come and say hello, and share with me your support of local art.
