Lawrence and Holloman

by Andrea
January 4th, 2013

What Doesn’t Kill You Still Hurts.

LAWRENCE & HOLLOMAN is a dark comedy feature film based on the play by Morris Panych, directed by Matthew Kowalchuk, starring Ben Cotton & Daniel Arnold.

Lawrence & Holloman Productions Inc., Quadrant Motion Pictures, Ameland Films Inc. and Finalé Editworks are proud to announce that the Telefilm Canada funded dark comedy feature film LAWRENCE & HOLLOMAN which filmed November 5-28 in Vancouver, Mission, Maple Ridge & Abbotsford, BC, Canada has now wrapped principal photography. An IndieGoGo funding campaign to assist with post production has been launched at IndieGoGo.com.

Lawrence & Holloman explores what happens when two opposing outlooks on life collide – optimism and pessimism. Lawrence, an ever-optimistic suit salesman, lives a happy-go-lucky, charmed life, in which everything goes right until he meets Holloman, a cynical and pessimistic accounting clerk, and everything starts to go wrong.

Based on the play ‘Lawrence & Holloman’ by Governor General Award-winning Canadian playwright Morris Panych (Vigil, Girl in the Goldfish Bowl), the screenplay was co-written by Daniel Arnold (The Janitors, Penguins) and Matthew Kowalchuk (The Janitors, Penguins). This is Kowalchuk’s feature film directorial debut whose short films and stage direction have garnered him several awards.

The film stars Ben Cotton (Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome, Stargate: Atlantis) and Daniel Arnold (The PI Experiment, Penguins) with Katharine Isabelle (American Mary, Ginger Snaps) & Amy Matysio (Just Friends).

You only get to do your first feature once. I can’t imagine a more supportive producing team or a better cast or crew to have done this with. The excitement and energy around the set every day was astounding, and got us through many challenges. Now — so they tell me — the hard work begins! – Director Matthew Kowalchuk

The film attracted a talented team that includes award winning twin Cinematographers Nelson Talbot & Graham Talbot (Primary), Production Designer Guy Roland (Backmask), Costume Designer Jojo MacDowall (The PI Experiment) & Editor Greg Ng (Ends of the Earth, Sunflower Hour). The film was cast by Emmy-nominated Candice Elzinga Casting.

Heading up the Producing team are Paul Armstrong (Moving Malcolm, See Gray Fly, Ill Fated), Daniel Arnold & Matthew Kowalchuk. Mary Anne Waterhouse (Fido, The Thaw, Donovan’s Echo) & Andrew Currie (Fido, The Delicate Art of Parking, Mile Zero) of Quadrant Motion Pictures serve as Executive Producers. Completing the team are Co-Producer/Line Producer Robyn Wiener (American Mary, The Wingman, Amazon Falls) & Associate Producer Don Thompson of Finalé Editworks.

The film received development funding from The Astral Media Harold Greenberg Fund, Corus Entertainment & British Columbia Film. OutTV has committed to broadcast the film and a festival circuit is planned for the Fall of 2013 with the goal of a theatrical release shortly thereafter.

My Local Christmas List 2012

by Andrea
December 10th, 2012

It’s that time of year where I go on the hunt for some cool local products that I want for Christmas. Here they are, in no particular order of preference- love them all!

1. Fingerless “Ugg” gloves from  Bling A Girl Thing

This past spring I picked up the most amazing leather and sparkle wrap bracelet  from Bling A Girl Thing, and now, what better to pair it with then these gloves.

2. A donation to a local Animal Charity

There’s a few great not for profit animal services in the Maple Ridge area and I’d love to receive a donation in my name to any one of these organizations:

Katie’s Place- because I love cats, and I love the work this shelter does.

J&M Acres Horse Rescue -  they are  selling a 15$ calendar to raise funds, check it out on their website.

Hearts On Noses – because other, often forgotten animals such as mini pigs need our assistance too.

3. Cheese.

I’m not picky- any cheese will do! Although I do have a soft spot for Gouda. Golden Ears Cheesecrafters offers  cheese gift boxes to package up this yummy present. A perfect gift!

4.  This exact Nado sweater

Christmas isn’t Christmas without a warm comfy sweater. I love this oversize Canadian made sweater from Uncommon Thredz in Mission, BC.

5. Joy

Joy-  the true experience of it.  And this  this lovely Joy sign from Tonya Makuch Handpainted Furniture to bring  Joy for Christmas’ to come!

Shopping local rocks. Challenge yourself to spend buy at least one gift this holiday season from a local small business!

Local Food: Rocko’s Diner

by Andrea
December 4th, 2012

July 11, 1956  the “Hi-Lite Burger Bar” opened it’s doors and Mission, BC had it’s first Drive-In.

In the 1980′s the restaurant changed hands and became Rocko’s Diner, the  first 24 hour diner  in town.  Today, you can still get a fresh cup of coffee whenever you want.

It’s a quirky little place with an odd little website, both featuring the standard 50′s food and style, complete with Betty Boop and all.

The food is homey and what you’d expect at a typical diner. On the menu: daily specials with a retro ring, darn good burgers  including pot roast piled with gravy, mashed potatoes  and corn.  The Milkshake is an absolute must.  The ultimate Rocko’s experience are the deep fried dill pickles, not something you’ll find at the average restaurant and the number one reason  I am going back.

Deep Fried Dill Pickles

Of course, no diner meal is complete without a killer desert, and Rocko’s has a great selection of pies and cakes. My favorite? the Red Velvet Cake, classic and the new trend, Rocko’s version is to die for. Or at least come back for.

On the weekends, the place is packed for brunch- and although I haven’t been, I’ve seen the parking lot. I’ve heard it’s because of the deep fried french toast- let me know if you try it.
